While my summer frocks are very American 1960′s/70′s with bits of hippie and ridiculousness, my winter style reverts back to a more buttoned up, conservative granny style in colorful Asian dresses from the retro period or a bunch of colorblocked knits a la the last MoMu shop listing. When I was teaching in Seoul and would wear these old Korean and Japanese goodies to work thinking they were so fab, my students eyed me strangely and said tentatively, “Teacher… grandmother fashion.” I took that as a compliment even though I knew it wasn’t.
Especially the Japanese retro dresses take their cues from French style so I love their elegance. And I throw on tights and some chunky sweaters over them for some warmth. But perhaps the best thing in this week’s shop listings are the three 1940′s Chinese silk handtailored dresses I picked up in Cambodia last year. They are in PERFECT condition and so incredible.
